Macy's Inc. has reached a settlement in a proposed class action accusing the company of illegally gathering customer data during credit card transactions, according to an order dismissing the case filed in California federal court Friday.

Macy's Inc. moved Wednesday to extinguish a proposed class action alleging the clothing retailer violated a California law by illegally collecting consumers' personal information at the checkout counter, arguing the plaintiff's failure to allege his information was written down by a Macy's employee dooms the lawsuit.
