A New York debt collector has agreed to a more than $22.5 million suspended judgment entered Thursday in a deal resolving its portion of a suit brought by the Federal Trade Commission and New York attorney general accusing it and two other firms of deceptive and abusive practices.

The Federal Trade Commission and New York state have asked a federal judge to order allegedly phony Buffalo-area debt collectors to hand over $22.5 million, arguing a plethora of “overwhelming and irrefutable” evidence leaves no doubt that they harassed and threatened customers into paying millions.

In a move that demonstrates federal and state regulators' push to bring the debt collection industry in line, the Federal Trade Commission and New York state announced Thursday that they are teaming up to pursue Buffalo-area collectors accused of deceiving and bullying consumers into shelling out $45 million.
