Chemical groups and seven major railroads agreed Friday to drop a D.C. federal suit over the railroads' obligations to carry toxic chemicals, saying recent legislation extending a deadline to implement a high-tech rail transport safety system makes the issue of service suspensions irrelevant.

The country's seven major railroad companies asked a Washington, D.C., federal judge on Monday not to strip them of the authority to decline toxic cargo loads, saying that approving such an order would place business interests of shipping companies ahead of safety concerns.

Railroad giants asked a D.C. federal court on Monday to toss a suit seeking to block them from suspending rail service if Congress doesn't extend the current Dec. 31 deadline to implement positive train control, saying the Surface Transportation Board has jurisdiction over the rail safety matter.
