Citigroup Inc.’s mortgage unit told an Illinois federal judge on Thursday to toss a proposed class action brought by borrowers claiming the bank inappropriately charged them with property inspection fees, saying the complaint reads more like a contract dispute than a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act claim.

Citigroup Inc.'s mortgage unit and a contractor violated the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act by inappropriately inspecting the properties of people who fell behind on their mortgages and then charging fees related to those inspections, according to a putative class action filed Thursday in Illinois federal court.
