A Maryland federal judge ruled Wednesday that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau had a viable case against a company accused of deceiving people with cognitive disabilities into parting with their structured settlements on the cheap, but threw out charges against a lawyer accused of playing a key role in the scheme.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on Monday sued a Maryland-based firm and its outside attorney for allegedly tricking lead paint poisoning victims into signing up for structured settlements that resulted in the victims signing away future settlement dollars in exchange for far lower lump-sum payments.
