A California federal judge has given the go-ahead to two lawsuits between law firm Geragos & Geragos APC and Travelers Indemnity Co. of Connecticut over coverage for losses stemming from COVID-related shutdowns, finding there is diversity jurisdiction and refusing to dismiss, stay or remand either case.

Geragos & Geragos APC on Tuesday asked a California federal judge to dismiss Travelers Casualty Insurance Co. of America's suit seeking a declaration that it does not have to cover the law firm's financial losses during the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing the insurer "clearly engaged" in forum shopping.

Travelers Casualty Insurance Co. of America is taking Geragos & Geragos APC to California federal court, saying it has no duty to cover the law firm for business losses during the COVID-19 pandemic because the virus has not caused "physical loss or damage" to the firm's offices.
