Colorado federal judge has awarded an Australian company nearly $8.5 million for a startup's "complete disregard" of its ownership of a patented air conditioning technology, finding the startup had continued to market the technology as its own throughout the lawsuit and tried to avoid liability by disappearing from the litigation.

An Australian air conditioning and heating company is asking a federal judge for $9 million in damages and an injunction to bar a Colorado startup from stealing its trade secrets, according to a proposed order filed this week, citing attempts by the startup to "evade liability" and continue promoting products using its proprietary technology overseas.
