A United Steelworkers affiliate on Thursday told a Texas federal judge not to side with Valero Services Inc.'s claim that the union breached a last chance agreement by taking a grievance over a worker's firing to arbitration, saying the dispute can go before an arbitrator.

Oil and gas producer Valero Services Inc. sued a United Steelworkers local for what it claimed was a breached promise not to challenge a worker's termination and asked a Texas federal court to halt grievance arbitration proceedings.
