Duke Ordered To Stop Contamination From NC Coal Ash Sites

Law360, New York (March 6, 2014, 7:52 PM EST) -- Duke Energy Progress Inc. must take immediate action to stop groundwater contamination caused by its 14 North Carolina power plants, a state judge ruled on Thursday, finding that a state environmental commission had misinterpreted a regulation pertaining to coal ash ponds.

Wake County Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway ordered Duke Energy Progress and Duke Energy Carolinas LLC to immediately correct groundwater contamination caused by coal ash ponds at their North Carolina power plants, reversing a North Carolina Environmental Management Commission decision that found urgent action wasn't nescessarily required.
