Conservation Groups Push For ESA Protections For Giraffes

Law360, New York (April 20, 2017, 3:57 PM EDT) -- Dramatic population declines mean giraffes deserve to be protected as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, five conservation groups told the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday.

The Center for Biological Diversity, the National Resources Defense Council, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, Humane Society International and Humane Society of the United States submitted a petition, claiming giraffe populations have declined up to 40 percent since the 1980s and citing ongoing threats to the species’ survival.
