US Accuses Chemed Hospice Units of Medicare Fraud

Law360, New York (May 3, 2013, 5:17 PM EDT) -- The U.S. government hit one of the largest hospice chains in the country with a lawsuit Thursday, accusing it of scamming Medicare by submitting hospice care claims for patients who were not terminally ill.

Cincinnati-based Chemed Corp. and its subsidiary VITAS Hospice LLC ignored patients' medical needs by providing unnecessary hospice services typically reserved for those terminally ill or requiring short-term continuous care, according to the complaint filed in the Western District of Missouri.
