According to figures collected annually by the Centers for Disease Control, in 2013 American parents welcomed nearly 70,000 infants conceived via in vitro fertilization, accounting for 1.5 percent of all U.S. births. While these children undoubtedly brought joy into their parents' lives, their conception likely created a downstream dilemma that plagues many ART participants. Typically and hopefully, an IVF cycle will produce more embryos than are necessary or safe for transfer back to a woman's uterus. These excess embryos are frozen for later use, often with the goal of enabling a wholeblood sibling to join the family unit. But life sometimes intervenes, causing the gamete providers to rethink their original disposition plans....
