G-20 Finance Ministers Abandon Free Trade Sentiment

Law360, New York (March 19, 2017, 1:11 PM EDT) -- Top finance and banking officials for the world’s 20 most powerful economies flouted the longstanding tradition of including explicit support for free trade in their joint statement Saturday, offering only a vague platitude about maximizing the benefits of trade for global society.

The decision to drop the condemnation of trade protectionism came at the behest of U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, according to reports from media outlets on hand at the G-20 summit in Baden-Baden, Germany.
