USPTO Rejects Inter Partes Review Under AIA For 1st Time

Law360, New York (March 4, 2013, 5:53 PM EST) -- A U.S. Patent and Trademark Office panel recently decided not to institute an inter partes review of a Mentor Graphics Corp. patent requested by Synopsys Inc., marking the first denial of an inter partes review petition since the new proceeding became available.

In a Feb. 22 decision, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board concluded that Synopsys had failed to support its claims that Mentor's patent for emulating integrated circuit designs is rendered anticipated and obvious by earlier patents.
