Fed. Circ. Affirms Circuit Design Patents Are Abstract

Law360, New York (October 17, 2016, 6:01 PM EDT) -- The Federal Circuit on Monday affirmed a California federal court’s ruling that the asserted claims of patents for a logic-circuit design are invalid because they are abstract under the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2014 Alice ruling.

The appellate court panel agreed with Mentor Graphics Corp. that the asserted claims of the three Synopsys Inc. patents are directed to ineligible subject matter, as they do not relate to complex calculations used in computer-based synthesis of the circuits, according to its opinion.
