European Patent Grants Reach All-Time High, EPO Says

Law360, New York (March 7, 2017, 7:16 PM EST) -- The European Patent Office both received more patent applications and granted more patents in 2016 than it did in the previous year, according to data released Tuesday, setting a new all-time high.

The European intellectual property authority said in its annual report that it granted 96,000 patents in 2016, 40 percent more than in 2015 and the most it has granted in one year in its history.

The agency also saw a 6.2 percent rise in patent application filings, according to the report, which the office characterized as "an indicator of the growing demand for patent protection from businesses worldwide."...
