Travelers Owes Key-Copier Defense In Rival's Suit

Law360, Los Angeles (August 11, 2017, 7:55 PM EDT) -- A Travelers subsidiary breached its duty to defend Minute Key Inc. against allegations the self-service key duplication company falsely accused a competitor of patent infringement, and failed to establish that an exclusion for intellectual property claims barred coverage, a Colorado federal judge ruled Friday.

In the underlying suit, the Hillman Group, which also makes self-service key duplication kiosks, alleged that Minute Key damaged Hillman's business relationship with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. by falsely claiming to the retail giant that Hillman's technology infringed Minute Key's patents.
