The legal profession can be a lonely place for attorneys with disabilities. They are often overlooked in diversity discussions, and may feel pressure to downplay their disability out of fear of facing bias and stigma. On this week's Pro Say podcast, we dive into these challenges and highlight how disabled attorneys are fighting for their place in the law.
Each week on Pro Say, Law360 staffers Amber McKinney, Bill Donahue and Alex Lawson bring you inside the newsroom and break down what you need to know about key legal developments.
Law360 has put together a special series of stories on how disabled attorneys are faring in the legal industry. Senior reporter Brandon Lowrey joins the show this week to explain why disabled attorneys have been gaining traction in BigLaw more slowly than women and minorities. He tells us how those with disabilities often find little support while navigating an inhospitable industry, and what could change that in the future.
Then, senior reporter Erin Coe discusses one subset of "invisible" disabilities: mental illness. Mental health issues impact a disproportionate number of attorneys, and while stigma around these conditions is still rampant, Erin tells us why things may be getting a little better.
