Heaton points out certain hazards of nose-count diversity, i.e. the award of opportunities on the basis of race, religion, gender or other factors that the Constitution generally asks us to ignore. However, his article overlooks the value of the proper use of visible diversity both as a health check on true ecological diversity and as an indicator that a firm’s hiring and advancement criteria or workplace environment are not well-suited to the performance of the organization’s tasks.
