States Push FDA To Hone Compounding Oversight Plan

Law360, New York (December 19, 2012, 7:09 PM EST) -- State officials expressed skepticism Wednesday about the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's plan to split oversight of compounding pharmacies following a deadly meningitis outbreak, saying different types of compounding should be more precisely defined.

The FDA convened a meeting with representatives from all 50 states after Commissioner Margaret Hamburg told lawmakers she wanted the agency to have jurisdiction over so-called nontraditional compounders, with states retaining jurisdiction over traditional compounders.
