Monsanto Faces 8,000 Glyphosate Suits, Bayer CEO Says

By Emily Field (August 23, 2018, 8:18 PM EDT) -- The head of Bayer AG on Thursday said that there are now 8,000 lawsuits against its recently acquired Monsanto over glyphosate-based weed killers, the focus of a recent trial that ended in $289 million jury award to a school groundskeeper who claimed they caused his cancer.

Bayer CEO Werner Baumann said in an investor conference call that the number of lawsuits in federal and state courts is now 8,000 as of the end of July. The company had previously disclosed that there were 5,200 lawsuits against Monsanto, which it acquired in a $62 billion deal earlier this summer.
