Food Industry Turns To Online Labels To Thwart GMO Suits
Law360, New York (December 4, 2015, 8:47 PM EST) -- A group of major food companies including ConAgra and Nestle have announced an online labeling effort to provide disclosures including whether their products contain genetically engineered ingredients — a potential defense against consumer suits as regulators hesitate to define the term "natural" or compel the industry to disclose genetically modified ingredients.
The food industry trade group Grocery Manufacturers Association on Wednesday announced a so-called SmartLabel technology labeling system that would allow consumers to access more information about a product's ingredients by scanning a bar code or searching it online.
