Bargaining Power Key To Walgreens, Rite Aid Merger Review

Law360, New York (October 28, 2015, 8:44 PM EDT) -- Walgreens Boots Alliance's $17.2 billion bid for rival Rite Aid will likely face tough antitrust scrutiny as officials weigh whether allowing two of the nation's three largest pharmacy chains to merge would give the companies too much bargaining power over pharmacy benefit managers and end up driving up prices for consumers.

The cash deal announced Tuesday would let Walgreens, already the largest retail pharmacy operator in the country, add third-place Rite Aid's nearly 4,600 locations.
