Judging A Book: Wallach Reviews 'Uncivil Warriors'
Judge Evan Wallach John C. Calhoun of South Carolina had it right. In his dying speech to the Senate, he said that unless the North accepted slavery as a norm, the South would have “to choose between abolition and secession.” Calhoun, of course, viewed slavery as a “positive good,” and he apparently hoped a slave union would endure.
