Varney Signals Tough Stance On Monopoly Rules

Law360, New York (May 11, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The Obama administration's top antitrust official signaled Monday that the U.S. Department of Justice would aggressively pursue investigations of monopoly abuse, in an about-face from the enforcement philosophy pushed by the Antitrust Division under the Bush administration.

In a speech at the Center for American Progress on Monday morning, Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney said the department was immediately withdrawing a report issued in September 2008 detailing the department's approach under the Bush administration to monopolization offenses.
