IRS Grants 1-Day Filing Extension After System Outage

Law360 (April 17, 2018, 7:06 PM EDT) -- The Internal Revenue Service is giving taxpayers a one-day extension to file and pay their taxes after experiencing technical difficulties with its online filing system on Tuesday.

The agency announced shortly before 7 p.m. Eastern that its systems were back online and that individuals and businesses with a filing or payment deadline of April 17 will now have until Wednesday, April 18.

"This is the busiest tax day of the year, and the IRS apologizes for the inconvenience this system issue caused for taxpayers," acting IRS Commissioner David Kautter said. "The IRS appreciates everyone's patience during this period."
