USPTO Chief Pushes 'New Narrative' Of Patent Benefits

Law360, Washington (April 20, 2018, 8:47 PM EDT) -- U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Director Andrei Iancu on Friday called for a "new narrative" about patents that emphasizes their benefit to society, illustrating his point in a speech at a lunch for women in intellectual property by highlighting the breakthrough inventions of Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr.

Iancu, who in speeches since taking office in February has criticized rhetoric surrounding patents that is overly focused on the faults or abuses of the system, used his talk at the American Bar Association Intellectual Property Law Conference in Arlington, Virginia, to call for a more positive dialogue on patents.
