Sunoco Not Liable As Successor For Cleanup: Judge

Law360, New York (June 15, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal judge has ruled that Sunoco Inc. cannot be considered the legal successor to Atlantic Richfield Co. in a suit seeking to hold both companies liable for petroleum contamination from a refinery in south Philadelphia.

Judge Anita B. Brody of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on Thursday denied the U.S. government's bid to hold Sunoco liable as a successor, granting partial summary judgment to the petroleum company on the issue.
