Valero Refinery Under Scrutiny For Toxic Flares

Law360, New York (June 16, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Delaware state officials are investigating several recent reported incidents in which a reopened Valero Energy Corp. refinery in Delaware City released hundreds of pounds of sulfur dioxide and other chemicals into the air.

According to incident reports Valero filed with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, the refinery released more than 100 pounds of sulfur dioxide, classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as extremely hazardous, and more than 1,000 pounds of butane into the atmosphere in two separate incidents on Monday afternoon....
