Voluntary Calif. Tax Proposed To Fund Clean Water Projects

By Philip Rosenstein (August 20, 2018, 6:44 PM EDT) -- Amid California's endemic water crisis, two Senate bills that aim to fund clean water projects through a voluntary water tax on households and a fee on fertilizing materials have been referred to the Assembly Budget Committee.

The bills, both introduced by Senate Majority Leader Bill Monning, D-Monterey, come after an attempt to implement a mandatory water bill tax failed earlier in the year. S.B. 845 would shift to a voluntary tax on water bills and S.B. 844 would increase the mandatory tax on the sale of fertilizing materials starting in 2019.
