3rd-Party Funder Gets $1.75M In IRS Tea Party Class Action

Law360 (August 20, 2018, 3:52 PM EDT) -- An Ohio federal court has awarded $1.75 million in fees to a third party that funded a class action alleging the Internal Revenue Service illegally targeted Tea Party groups vying for nonprofit status that resulted in a $3.5 million settlement.

U.S. District Judge Michael R. Barrett on Friday approved the reimbursement request of $1.75 million, or half of the settlement fund, for expenses incurred by conservative organization Citizens for Self Governance.

"There is an important societal interest in rewarding attorneys and third-party funders who engage in public interest litigation," Judge Barrett said.
