Sens. Urge DHS To Stop Deporting Southeast Asian Refugees

By Suzanne Monyak (January 7, 2019, 8:47 PM EST) -- A group of 13 senators has urged Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen to halt the deportations of long-term U.S. residents from Southeast Asia, including Vietnam War refugees, saying in a letter that the deportations violate a repatriation agreement between the U.S. and Vietnam.

The senators, including 12 Democrats and an independent, told Secretary Nielsen in a Dec. 21 letter published Friday that they are concerned about recent reports that the Trump administration had interpreted the 2008 repatriation agreement as allowing it to deport certain Vietnamese immigrants who arrived in the U.S. prior to 1995, the year that the U.S. reestablished...
