FTC Challenges $20M Health Care Clinic Merger

Law360, New York (July 24, 2009, 4:07 PM EDT) -- The Federal Trade Commission is challenging the $20 million acquisition of two outpatient centers by health care provider Carilion Clinic, saying the merger eliminated vital competition and would likely lead to an increase in health care costs for Virginia residents.

The FTC said Friday it had issued an administrative complaint against the 2008 takeover of Roanoke, Va.-based Center for Advanced Imaging and Center for Surgical Excellence, concerned the deal could lead to a 900 percent jump in consumers' out-of-pocket expenses and reduce incentives to maintain quality...
