Unified Gets Mixed Ruling In Uniloc Patent Challenge At PTAB

By Tiffany Hu (April 30, 2019, 2:37 PM EDT) -- Defensive patent group Unified Patents Inc. has scored a partial victory in its effort to invalidate a Uniloc file-copying patent, with the Patent Trial and Appeal Board finding some parts of the patent obvious in light of a combination of prior inventions.

The PTAB, in a ruling made public Friday, struck down eight of 19 claims in Uniloc's U.S. Patent No. 6,564,229, which covers technology meant to improve the process of copying large computer files, after concluding that Unified showed that the combined teachings in the earlier patents made those claims obvious.
