Ex-Fugee, 1MDB Suspect Hit With Campaign Finance Charges
Law360 (May 10, 2019, 9:51 PM EDT) -- Former Fugees rapper Pras Michel was charged alongside a suspect in Malaysia's 1MDB bond fraud scandal with a conspiracy to illegally funnel $1.9 million in foreign contributions to former President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign, prosecutors announced on Friday.
Michel allegedly received some $21.6 million from Jho Low, a financier who is accused of orchestrating a $2.7 billion fraud on Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, in the summer of 2012. Prosecutors say Michel then funneled around $1.9 million into Obama’s reelection campaign in an attempt to “buy access and potential influence” for himself and Low with the Obama administration.
