Marketplace Tax Laws Reshaped Retail, Ex-EBay Official Says
Law360, Washington (May 16, 2019, 6:53 PM EDT) -- A year before the landmark Wayfair decision, states changed the structure of retail when they began creating marketplace tax laws, a former high-level official at eBay Inc. said Thursday.
Everything about the business changed when state laws proclaimed the marketplace provider rather than the seller on the marketplace platform was now the “retailer,” responsible for registering with the state and collecting and remitting tax on behalf of vendors, said William Lasher, former senior director of indirect taxes at one of the world’s largest online marketplaces.
