AFSCME Sues Ill. To Block Layoffs Of State Workers

Law360, New York (August 24, 2009, 6:13 PM EDT) -- The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees is suing Illinois to stop the state government from laying off 2,600 employees, saying the state has violated a collective bargaining agreement by employing private contractors to do union work.

AFSCME asked the Circuit Court for the First Judicial Circuit in Johnson County, Ill., on Monday to grant a preliminary injunction that would stop the state from firing workers until the union can complete arbitration with the government over the impact of the layoffs.
