$10M Award May 'Raise Stakes' For Firing Mass. Profs

Law360, Boston (September 9, 2019, 4:14 PM EDT) -- Massachusetts' highest court on Monday questioned whether allowing a researcher to collect a $10 million judgment to cover the cost of her cancer research after a hospital pulled the plug on her lab would “raise the stakes” for removing professors even if they engaged in misconduct.

The Supreme Judicial Court heard arguments from Steward Health Care System LLC, which said a jury and lower court judge went way beyond the bounds of the law when they awarded Lynn Hlatky millions for her dismantled lab even though that property did not belong to her.
