E.C. Efforts To Deregulate Telecom Industry Fall Short

Law360, New York (October 20, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Despite the European Commission’s attempts to deregulate the telecom industry, incumbent telecom operators still control the markets in 22 out of 25 countries in the European Union, the E.C. said in a report issued Friday.

After reviewing reports submitted by E.U. members, the Commission’s competition authority determined that national champions still control the telecom markets in the vast majority of E.U. countries.

“In the retail access markets, so far 22 national regulators found the incumbent to be dominant and imposed the appropriate obligations,” the Commission said....
