Rent-A-Center Gets Win Against Consumers In Mass.

Law360, New York (September 11, 2009, 5:17 PM EDT) -- A Massachusetts law that caps interest on sales installment deals does not apply to rent-to-own contracts, the state's high court has ruled in a defeat for consumers alleging Rent-A-Center Inc. hid interest rates from its customers.

The Supreme Judicial Court for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts ruled Sept. 10 that the state's Retail Installment Sales Act does not apply to rent-to-own contracts because the transactions they govern do not qualify as “sales.”
