Australia Moves To Split Up Telecom Giant Telstra

Law360, New York (September 15, 2009, 3:02 PM EDT) -- The Australian government introduced legislation Tuesday that would allow Telstra Corp. to voluntarily separate its operations or otherwise subject the telecommunications giant to tough new antitrust rules that would effectively force the split.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said in a statement the new law would encourage Telstra to submit an enforceable undertaking to structurally separate its network business from its retail arm, but give the government the power to impose a “strong functional separation framework” if the company refused.
