Senate Panel OKs Satellite Broadcasting Bill

Law360, New York (September 24, 2009, 5:16 PM EDT) -- Following the lead of its U.S. House of Representatives counterpart, the Senate Judiciary Committee has approved legislation aimed at extending the compulsory copyright licenses that allow cable and satellite television operators to retransmit television signals.

By a voice vote Thursday, the committee approved S. 1670, the Satellite Television Modernization Act of 2009, which would simplify licenses for satellite providers that are slated to expire at the end of the year, and adjust the licenses so that they comply with the new digital television standard.
