BP Faces Contract Action Over Natural Gas Royalties

Law360, New York (October 2, 2009, 12:42 PM EDT) -- A group of individuals and trusts has lodged a putative class action accusing the U.S. arm of energy giant BP PLC of breach of contract for withholding royalties on natural gas sales.

The plaintiffs are individuals and trustees who own overriding royalty interests in the San Juan Basin in New Mexico, where BP America Production Co. holds leases to extract natural gas liquids to produce hydrocarbons, according to a complaint filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico.
