Judge Trebles Invitrogen’s Cash Award

Law360, New York (November 1, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- A federal judge on Tuesday increased a $7.8 million jury damage award in a patent-infringement case to $16.2 million, the latest in a long-running dispute between two life science companies over a patent involving a process for creating competent E. coli cells.

In his final judgment, Judge Sam Sparks of the U.S. District Court in Austin, Tex., trebled the enhanceable portion of the award that Stratagene Corp. must now pay to rival Invitrogen Corp.
