Groups Spar Over Medical Assistant Certification

Law360 (November 1, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- A healthcare association sued a competitor on Monday over the use of the phrase “certified medical assistant,” a term the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office designated as a trademark five years ago.

Illinois-based American Medical Technologists Inc., which is a nonprofit medical certification and professional membership association, filed suit against another Illinois nonprofit certification company, American Association of Medical Assistants, over the specific term that AAMA registered with the PTO in 2001.
