SMIC Stole Taiwan Semiconductor Trade Secrets: Jury

Law360, New York (November 4, 2009, 3:43 PM EST) -- A California jury has handed Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. a victory in a long-running trade secrets and contract dispute against Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp., potentially leaving SMIC on the hook for more than $2 billion in damages.

The jury in the Alameda County Superior Court ruled Tuesday that SMIC had used 65 of TSMC's chip-making trade secrets and breached a 2005 agreement between the companies. TSMC said the company will seek more than $2 billion from SMIC when the damages phase of the case begins Thursday....
