House OKs Bill Boosting Local Satellite Broadcasts

Law360, New York (December 4, 2009, 1:06 PM EST) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill amending satellite providers' compulsory copyright licenses to allow them to retransmit broadcast network programming in rural markets lacking local TV services, in an attempt to increase competition between cable and satellite providers.

The Satellite Home Viewer Update and Reauthorization Act of 2009, introduced by Reps. John Conyers, D-Mich., and Frederick Boucher, D-Va., passed a House vote on Thursday, 394-11.
