'New Breed' Of NPEs Spurs Increase In Patent Cases In Q1

By Tiffany Hu (April 15, 2021, 2:08 PM EDT) -- Patent litigation in the first quarter of 2021 has gone up compared to last spring, as "unshackled" nonpracticing entities continue to receive third-party funding to buy and enforce higher-quality patents, according to a new report.

The report, released Tuesday by RPX Corp., said that 1,164 defendants were added to "patent assertions campaigns" from January to March — a 43.3% increase compared to the same period in 2020.
