Texas Janitors Reach Settlement

Law360 (November 21, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- After a month-long strike complete with protests and dozens of arrests, 5,300 janitors in Houston, Tex. celebrated a victory Monday—and better wages, benefits and hours—when they approved a new contract from their employers.

The Service Employees International Union Local 5 had filed complaints in October with the National Labor Relations Board against five cleaning companies and a real-estate holding company.

The union members then marched out of their jobs and into the street, picketing and blocking some of the city’s major intersections.
