Senate Drops Repeal Of Insurance Antitrust Exemption

Law360, New York (December 22, 2009, 3:05 PM EST) -- In their fight to get health care reform legislation passed, U.S. Senate Democrats have abandoned a provision that effectively would repeal the health insurance industry's exemption from federal antitrust laws.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., who filed an amendment to the bill eliminating the antitrust exemption earlier this month, said in a statement on the Senate floor Monday that he was disappointed that the provision would not be part of the Senate's health reform legislation.
